Gantry Crane vs. EOT Crane: Which is Right for You?

June 12, 2024 Buying Guide 5 min read

Both cranes lift heavy loads, but they do it very differently. The EOT (Electric Overhead Traveling) crane runs on elevated rails, while the Gantry Crane (or Goliath Crane) runs on rails on the floor. Which one fits your facility?

1. EOT Crane (Overhead Crane)

The standard choice for indoor factories.

Pros:

  • Floor Space: Zero footprint on the floor. You can stack goods right up to the walls.
  • Speed: Generally faster travel speeds.
  • Safety: No rails on the ground to trip over or block forklifts.

Cons:

  • Building Structure: Requires a building capable of supporting the crane's weight. If your shed is weak, you need expensive column reinforcement.

2. Gantry Crane (Goliath Crane)

The crane stands on legs and moves on floor-mounted rails.

Pros:

  • No Building Required: Ideal for outdoor yards or rented warehouses where you cannot modify the structure.
  • Cost: Often cheaper than building a new steel structure to support an EOT crane.
  • Flexibility: Can be dismantled and moved to a new site easily.

Cons:

  • Floor Obstruction: The rails on the ground create a barrier. Forklifts and trucks cannot cross easily.
  • Safety: Moving legs at ground level pose a collision risk to workers and vehicles.

Decision Matrix

Scenario Best Choice
Indoor Factory with Strong Columns EOT Crane
Outdoor Storage Yard Gantry Crane
Rented Shed (Cannot Modify) Gantry Crane (or Semi-Gantry)
